Social media is a curse of our time, best way to stay private is to remove your self from equation i.e. particular network. If you can't second best not to use apps supplied by network and use their web sites instead, most of those apps are quite invasive some more than others, read their privacy policy and you'll be surprised. However there might be situations where you think it's necessary to participate in "social" network, so let's see what you can do to improve your privacy.
Step 1: Opt-out of facial recognition.
Step 2: Turn off location sharing on social media network(check-ins and so on).
Step 3: Do not share your adressbook with social media network and make your friend lists private.
Step 4: Opt-out of being tagged by your "friends", especially on pictures.
