Smart devices anyone?

In recent years there has been a steady rise of "smart" devices, it's hard to find fridge without connectivity to the Internet. While any commercial for those devices touts how smart devices are, and that they have many capabilities, however truth is bit different. In reality those are quite dumb devices which consist of sensor and that sends data to a service associated with that device. For example "smart" speakers do not run voice recognition locally, your voice is actually sent to an a service manufacturer setup where it's processed, and associated actions taken based on what you said. That means your data which is needed to perform functionality associated with such device is constantly being sent over to manufacturer service. There were also news stories when service was refused to people for one reason or another even though they purchased devices. Let's see how can we protect those.

Step 1: Review list you've created in Day 1 and go through each device on that list and see available privacy options.

Step 2: Disable unnecessary ones, like sending diagnostics data, or anything starting with "help us improve ..".

Step 3: Update default passwords or PINs if possible.

Step 4: Depending on a device limit amount of information it knows about you or sends.
